PLEASE NOTE: Due to the current situation regarding COVID-19 our childcare services will only be available for vulnerable children or children of key workers. All activities will be run in line with government advice on social distancing.
Our pre-school is based in the woodland and the children are outside all the time running around and playing but there is indoor space available should they wish to use it. Most don't! We have an intermediate area that the children can use which is provided by decking with a corrugated plastic roof over and this is where they tend to sit for lunch.
The assessment required by the Early Years Foundation Stage is recorded using the online software, Tapestry. This method means we are able to take photos, upload them and add comments immediately. Parents have access via secure logins to look at photos and comments and add messages of their own from the comfort of their home. We encourage parents to let us know what children are doing at home as well through this system.
We have a lovely mud kitchen for the children to play with, outside washing facilities and wonderful decking and canopy for when it is raining.
The indoor space includes a quiet area with reading books and indoor play equipment for those really bad weather days.
Little Owls is open five days a week during term-time.

The children are outside in all weathers so we encourage parents to buy good footwear and waterproofs and to dress children in layers for the winter. The only weather that forces us indoors is lightning and Gale Force 6 winds - then we evacuate to the Highwood Barn Visitor Centre where we have tables, chairs and resources that we can use. The clothes your children wear when attending Little Owls will determine their enjoyment of the sessions so here is a bit of guidance.
Waterproof dungarees and jacket with lots of base layers under (leggings, cotton tops, polo necks). Ideally not hoodies as they bulk up the back of the coat and will not fit over a woolly hat. (We have negotiated a discount for a local company supplying waterproof clothing - https://www.kozikidz.com/- and parents will be given the code once they have signed up).
Wellies (try and get neoprene lined boots for added warmth) with thick socks (and a spare pair in their bag - just in case!)
Hats should cover the ears and gloves should be waterproof.
Children should have sun cream and sun hats in their back pack during the summer months.
They should wear leggings/thin trousers and long sleeved tops even in warm weather to keep ticks at bay, however, if you choose to send children in shorts and t-shirts please just check them over on their return for any signs of ticks or other insect bites. These are rare but, just like any other woodland, they will be around.
Sandals are dangerous in woodland as children can trip over roots with the front of the sandal and open toes can get hurt so we recommend trainers.
